About Jiwon Yoo, Ph.D.
I’m a licensed psychologist providing virtual psychotherapy services for children and families in New York and New Jersey, as well as in the 35 and counting PSYPACT participating states (please see the list below).
Coming to the United States as a teen from South Korea, I can share that my own course of cultural adjustment and identity development has led me to become passionate about creating a safe support system for individuals and families of diverse cultural backgrounds. Throughout my career, I have devoted myself to providing therapeutic services that take into account the successes and challenges of immigrant populations, especially those of Asian American families. At Olive Street Center, I aim to continue my role as an advocate for children and families of diverse backgrounds, providing multiculturally sensitive therapeutic and community-based services.
Therapeutic Approach:
In my practice, I largely base my understanding of client issues on relational and family systems perspectives. This means I conceptualize presenting concerns within the context of one’s upbringing and intergenerational relationships. I also integrate play therapy, Parent Management Training (PMT), as well as core concepts and strategies from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT). Additionally, I employ a multicultural lens when working with my clients, taking into consideration the role of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion, and other cultural factors.
Specialization:
early childhood behavioral issues | emotion regulation issues | parenting issues | ADHD | trauma | anxiety | depression | Asian American family dynamics
** I am bilingual and have professional proficiency in Korean.
** I practice under the authority of PSYPACT, which allows me to see clients residing in the following states: AL, AZ, AR, CNMI, CO, CT, DE, DC, GA, ID, IL, IN, KS, KY, ME, MD, MI, MN, MO, NE, NJ, NV, NH, NC, OH, OK, PA, TN, TX, UT, VA, WA, WV, WI, and WY.
Education & Training:
Throughout my training, I had the privilege of working in various clinical settings, i.e., schools, hospitals, college counseling centers, and community-based clinics, providing individual/family/group therapy, as well as psychoeducational workshops and neuropsychological evaluations for clients across the lifespan. Aside from my work at Olive Street Center, I am on the Medical Staff as a psychologist at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, providing forensic psychosocial evaluations and trauma-focused psychotherapy for children who have experienced abuse and maltreatment.
